Cold Process Soap - January 2023

Cold Process Soap

Cold Process Soap is the traditional method of making soap with raw ingredients from scratch.

An example is the well-known South African Boerseep which has been made for centuries.

Close to Nature

Lanie Bath & Body only makes Vegan soaps which means we use plant oils and butters to create soap.

The oils and butters chosen affects the lather (how bubbly the soap is) and moisturising properties.

I love using the following plant derived oils and butters

Olive oil - Adds to the creaminess of the soap and moisturises the skin.

Coconut oil - Creates large bubbles and has great cleansing abilities.

Sweet almond oil - A lightweight oil full of fatty acids. It produces a rich conditioning lather.

Avocado oil - It feels silky and moisturising on the skin and is rich in vitamins A, B,D and E.

Shea Butter - A luxurious feel on the skin, a excellent moisturiser that can help soothe dry skin.

Other oils and butters I use include cocoa butter, mango butter, rice bran oil, palm oil and sun flower oil.

And then there is the creative part of soap making

Colourants used in my soaps are ethically sourced mica powders as well as natural colourants like indigo powder, clays and activated charcoal.

Biodegradable glitter from The Glitter Fairy is my favorite glitter to sprinkle on top of the soaps. The glitter is made from the fibres of eucalyptus trees. How magnificent is that!

Making the top of the soap a masterpiece is my favorite part. Piping a gorgeous top and adding embeds like dried rose buds, Himalayan salt or cute melt and pour embeds.

The Curing Process

Cold Process Soap needs roughly 24 hours to set in the mold and turn into soap (saponification). Then, it needs to cure for 4-6 weeks to allow water to evaporate. Curing creates a firmer and harder bar that lasts longer.

This is why custom orders have to be placed well in advance to enable me to create all the magic.

Let me know if you have used our soaps and if you like the designs and feel of it on your skin.

Love

Lanie
